Stronger and More Confident!
Congratulations to Ellie Embry, the BSC October 2021 Athlete of the Month!
Where were you in your fitness journey before BSC and where are you now?
I moved to the area about 8 months before starting at BSC. Due to the move and the pandemic, I hadn’t worked out hardly at all. Fitness has always been a big part of my life so it was a big change. Getting back into the swing of things after almost a year of no structure was definitely difficult, but I currently feel that I’m in the best shape I’ve been in years. I feel stronger than I ever have and look forward to continue working and getting better.
What were your goals when you started and have you achieved any of them?
When I first started in the burn program, my goal was to become confident enough to transition into CrossFit. Smaller goals getting there included getting a pull-up, being able to back squat my body weight and making friends. I have accomplished all of these so far, which is crazy to think about! I’m still working on getting double-unders, consistent muscle ups, and so many other things, but it’s fun to look back and see how my goals have evolved.
What about BSC makes you keep coming back?
Definitely the people! There’s always a positive energy in the gym. Even if I’m having a bad day or don’t feel like going in for the workout, I always leave the gym feeling better than when I walked in. (mentally that is haha)
When/what was your "ah ha!" moment?
I don’t specifically remember an ah ha moment where things just clicked, but I do remember realizing that my background in sports would help me a lot with different body weight movements. I’ve never been great at lifting and still don’t feel completely comfortable with a barbell, but when I realized that WODs often include various body weight movements, it was definitely a boost of encouragement.
Does anyone at the gym (member or trainer) inspire you and why?
There are so many bad ass ladies in the gym that inspire me! Every day I come to class and get my butt kicked by one of them. Just a few for example: Natalie CRUSHES when it comes to lifts, Kim is such a good runner and works so hard, Anacaren outpaces most guys, Krista pushes me every time we partner up, and the list goes on. Watching their successes inspires me all the time.
