Consistently Learning and Improving

Congratulations to Lucia Cabrejos, the BSC June 2021 Athlete of the Month!

Where were you in your fitness journey before BSC and where are you now?
Before joining BSC I had been going to another crossfit gym for 2 years, however, I did 70% boot camp and 30% CrossFit, so it was not until I joined BSC where I started learning the more technical moves and getting stronger.
What were your goals when you started and have you achieved any of them?
Really just to keep moving, I do enjoy exercising, but as I started doing CrossFit consistently my goals became learning and improving the techniques from different moves, like kipping pull-ups which I did not have until I started working on them at BSC. The snatch had always been a fear of mine, I have now learned the technique for that move thanks to the wonderful coaches we have, and although I still have work to do, I feel more confident when lifting that bar overhead while simultaneously squatting. I guess my goals are to be/stay fit, with that, I have also gotten stronger, and it’s a really nice feeling when I get a PR.
What about BSC makes you keep coming back?
The people/community, I tried a couple of other gyms before this one, and I knew this was the right place for me within the 1st class. I had not even been here for a month and I felt like part of the BSC family/community, everyone is so welcoming, inviting, friendly and I have gained many friendships from here. During Covid this was social hour for me. I always look forward to going to class because aside from getting an awesome workout and feeling inspired by the other athletes, the feeling I get when I get done with the workout is amazing and it builds so much confidence. And there is always a move to learn or improve on, it never gets boring, there is always an opportunity for setting new goals.
When/what was your "ah ha!" moment?
My “ah ha!” moments have happened when after months of trying to understand the technique of certain movements all the sudden it clicks, it just happens, my body does it without having to think too much of all the steps and it feels effortless (ie. toes to bar).
Does anyone the gym (member or trainer) inspire you and why?
Yes, I’m inspired by most people at BSC, whether it’s the elite athlete that makes everything look so easy, when I know the hard work and consistency that it took to get there, to the athlete that finishes last, because they are putting in just as much effort, and despite knowing and seeing that others have finished the WOD they are still going and giving it their best. The coaches, because they demonstrate great enthusiasm during class, even if they have been there all day and it’s the last class of the day, they are guiding us, always paying attention to make sure our form looks good and wanting us to improve, cheering us on/ pumping us up, they are supportive, and so humble.
