Focus and Effort Lead to Skills and Confidence
Congratulations to Pradheepa Krishnasamy, the July 2023 BSC Athlete of the Month!
Where were you in your fitness journey before BSC and where are you now?
’ve been running half marathons for the last 10 years and during my last marathon in 2019, I realized I need to focus on strength training. I started to during Covid, and it helped a lot with running. I wanted to take it to the next level and that’s when I joined CrossFit. The different variations of exercises challenge me and make me look forward to each workout. My focus has always been to be strong and I’m at the strongest I’ve ever been physically.
What were your goals when you started and have you achieved any of them?
My goal was to learn new techniques and proper form - I have not done snatch or power clean or split jerk before. The coaches teach techniques really well and they break it down into simple steps and advise different levels. I’m able to lift heavy weights now with confidence so yes, I’ve achieved my goal and I continue to make progress.
What about BSC makes you keep coming back?
Many reasons. First, The coaches are inspiring and motivating. Second, I’m surrounded by individuals who come in every day to give their best. It is a place where people at all fitness levels belong. When I see teenagers like Jack or Gianluca show up for 5:30 am class, it is really motivating. I can’t jump as high as Gianluca on Box jumps, but it challenges me to get out of my comfort zone. Third, I love the different workouts we have every day because it keeps it interesting for me.
When/what was your "ah ha" moment?
One of the BSC’s code of conduct says progress over perfection. This is so true for workouts and in life. Every single progress I have made so far at BSC has built my confidence to take on the next challenge and has humbled me as well. The mantra to be patient with myself, not to give up and to focus on progress than perfection, that mindset then translates to the rest of the day at work and personal life.
Does anyone at the gym (member or trainer) inspire you and why?
I love every single coach at BSC. I do the 5:30 am classes. Mike and Sasha are awesome in challenging me to get out of my comfort zone. They are always there for me. Joey’s snatch clinic was very helpful to remember the basics and he is an excellent teacher. Derick makes everything look/ feel easy. His easy attitude makes workouts feel easy even when they are not. If I am in Campbell’s class, I know he won’t let me give up. Emme and Katie are very supportive coaches and are patient in answering my questions. I’m always in awe of my fellow workout partners. I learn so much just watching them.
